Meet Dr. Hawes

Dr. Michael J. Hawes graduated summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and then with honors from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Postgraduate training in medicine/surgery, ophthalmology, and ophthalmic plastic surgery was completed at the University of Colorado and the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Hawes has been in private practice in Denver since 1980 and currently serves as Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He has taught and supervised postgraduate physicians in training for more than 25 years, and currently is one of the preceptors of an oculo-facial plastic surgery  fellowship training program coordinated by the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Selected repeatedly by his peer physicians to The Best Doctors in America, Dr. Hawes has performed thousands of surgeries on the face, eyelids, orbits, and tear ducts.

Dr. Hawes was named as one of Denver's best blepharoplasty surgeons in 5280 magazine.

Dr. Hawes is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). He is a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), which is the leading organization of oculoplastic surgeons in the United States and Canada. He served as President of this prestigious group of surgeons in 1998, after previous positions as Program Chairman (in charge of national meetings), and Secretary of Education (in charge of all the fellowship training programs). He helped start the ASOPRS Foundation in 1999 and served as its Chairman for 5 years.

Dr. Hawes is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was President of the Colorado Ophthalmological Society and served more than 10 years as a Committee member and Director of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC), the largest and most successful insurance carrier for ophthalmologists in the USA. 

Dr. Hawes reviewed manuscripts for the scientific journal Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as a member of the Editorial Board for 13 years, and continues to review submissions to the journal from oculoplastic surgeons around the world.

Dr. Hawes has authored over 30 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, and has been an invited speaker at national ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery meetings. He has operated on members of the Denver Broncos football team and the Colorado Avalanche hockey team to repair injuries. He often sees patients who have been to many other doctors but need another opinion or additional help.
